ENGAGE

Supporting migrant women as integration leaders

Immigration is not a new phenomenon in Europe and migrant communities have always made a major contribution to the economic development of the European Union and to the cultural diversity which characterizes European society today.  Still, the significant influx of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers hoping to build a new life in Europe increased over the last years. Within the growing refugee numbers the percentage of women and children has shown a marked increase as well.

There is ample evidence that the vast majority of state sponsored integration initiatives have failed to achieve the intended cross-community integration. The ENGAGE project (partners: Austria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Ireland and Italy) aims to counter this development, by targeting especially adult educators and migrant women.

The project therefore produces:

  • an integration leader curriculum addressed to migrant women that supports the acquisition of key skills essential to their new role as integration leaders in their communities;
  • an in-service training programme for adult educators and trainers to assist them in delivering the integration leader curriculum;
  • a toolbox of resources.
