STRAIGHTEN BASIC SKILLS

Strategy to raise awareness and improve, generalize and help tackling European needs for basic skills

Rationale and Motivation

One of the core areas of the European education policy is related to the need for improving the accessibility of learning opportunities for adults, especially for low qualified employees and long term unemployed, particularly with a focus on workplace basic skills. During the last years, several European projects have provided a range of education materials and have encouraged the development and implementation of new training courses and curricula. Nevertheless there is a lack of full and systematic approach. From the research carried out in the recent years, VET organisations have realised that in order to develop an effective training course on basic skills, a combination of a series of factors is necessary. When it comes to the improvement of basic skills at the workplace, the interaction of specific success factors can only lead to real enhancement of the said skills.

Aims and Target Groups

STRAIGHTEN BASIC SKILLS aims to offer a multi-perspective view and pool the successful indicators in a comprehensive strategy to effectively promote work related basic skills for adults, including the identification of successful environments, legal conditions, lifelong learning cultures, collective agreements, access pathways to employers and employees, professionalization of counsellors, trainers and tutors, quality assurance and the involvement of relevant actors.
